Her strength and courage,
Stays in our memories,
Margaret Clitherow who resided in York’s The Shambles in the 1500s is a Catholic martyr who refused to allow her fellow Catholics and children to be interrogated, so refused to talk and was put to death – even though she may have been pregnant with her fourth child. She died by a traditional English way of dealing with Catholics in her time, her front door was removed, placed on top of her and weights (large rocks and stones) placed on top, one at a time. But what stands out from this horrific episode of York and England’s history is the grace and courage of Margaret, a daughter, a wife and a mother, and ultimately a Catholic Martyr, now known as the Pearl Of York.
